UACDL is pleased to present our annual seminar, focused on criminal defense and mental health. Presenters will discuss a range of topics related to the representation of clients with mental conditions or illnesses ranging from psychotic disorders, neurological disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders, autism, juvenile brain development, and other conditions. Presenters will discuss available state resources, using forensic experts, and pleading guilty/not-guilty-and-mentally-ill.
This seminar will be a tremendous resource for every defense attorney. Whether you know it or not, at some point in your career you’ve represented clients with low IQ, borderline personality disorders, fetal alcohol syndrome, or brain injury. Not all clients are diagnosed with mental disorders, and those who are don’t necessarily volunteer that information. Attorney who are unfamiliar with these and other disorders–as well as the connection between these disorders and the criminal law–leave a lot on the table in terms of providing the representation that society’s most vulnerable people deserve.
